Healing Young Hearts
Supporting Children Through Therapy After the Loss of a Parent
As a mother and a therapist, my heart goes out to children who’ve experienced the profound loss of a parent. It’s one of the hardest things a child can go through, and it changes everything. Grief can be confusing and overwhelming for kids, especially because they often don’t have the words to express what they’re feeling.
At Mind Elevation, I focus on creating a safe, nurturing space where children can begin to process their emotions. Therapy for grieving children isn’t just about talking—it’s about finding creative and age-appropriate ways for them to express themselves. One of the most effective approaches I use is play therapy, where toys become tools for storytelling and exploration, helping children process their grief in a way that feels natural to them. I also incorporate art therapy, where children can draw or paint their feelings, unlocking emotions that may otherwise remain unspoken.
Each child’s grief journey is unique. Some children feel anger at the loss, others feel guilt, and many experience fear or confusion. My role as a therapist is to meet them where they are, help them understand their emotions, and guide them toward healing. I also work closely with the surviving family members to ensure that the child feels supported and understood at home.
Grief doesn’t have a timeline, and it’s okay for healing to take time. What’s important is that children have the tools they need to navigate this journey in a healthy way.
If your family is facing the loss of a parent, I encourage you to reach out. Together, we can help your child heal their heart and discover their resilience.
